It was a beautiful day for cross country at Walsh Park, and the Fremont Ross boys and girls made sure it was also a memorable one.

With more than 400 runners competing at the annual Norm Bray Invitational, Fremont Ross welcomed a strong field of teams to its home course. Both Little Giant squads came ready to compete, and they did just that at a very high level.

For first-year head coach Mark Sheidler, his first Norm Bray Invitational at the helm will be one he won't soon forget.

The biggest celebration of the day belonged to the Fremont Ross girls, who captured the Norm Bray Invitational team championship for the first time in program history.

And they did it in dramatic fashion.

Ross finished with 55 points, narrowly edging Bowling Green with 56 and Perrysburg with 57. Just two points separated the top three teams in an incredibly competitive race. Perrysburg alone brought more than 140 runners to the event, helping create an outstanding atmosphere throughout Walsh Park.

"What we saw today wasn't an accident; it was the direct result of everything this team put into motion months ago," Sheidler said. "Over the summer, these girls laid the foundation with three simple things: belief, attitude, and preparation. Today, it was all about execution."

Leading that execution was Lily Kiser, who didn't just run a great race—she made Fremont Ross history.

Kiser crossed the finish line in 18:33, taking second place overall and breaking the Fremont Ross school record, a decades-old mark previously held by legendary Little Giant runner Jami (Toeppe) Raubenolt.

It was a special moment for Kiser and for the entire Fremont Ross cross country program.

"A special congratulations to Lily Kiser, whose school record-breaking 18:33 cements her place in Fremont Ross history," Sheidler said.

But the championship was a complete team effort.

Julia Norris turned in an outstanding performance, finishing third overall in 19:47, while Brooklynn Eisenhauer was right behind her in fourth place at 20:04. Ariana Hinojosa-Williams finished 15th in 20:57, followed by Kennedy Walker in 34th at 22:02 and Sophia Metcalf in 49th at 22:47.

Those performances added up to a historic championship on the Little Giants' home course.

"To watch this group set numerous PRs, defeat the defending champions from both divisions, and claim our first-ever girls team title at the Norm Bray Invite is a testament to their dedication," Sheidler said. "Today, the work met the moment."

The Fremont Ross boys also put together an impressive day against a talented field.

Bowling Green captured the boys championship with 43 points, followed by Perrysburg with 69 and Northview with 86. Fremont Ross finished fourth with 117 points, earning the spot after winning a tiebreaker with Findlay.

The difference came from Colin Rich, whose 52nd-place finish in 19:00 gave Ross the edge in the tiebreaker and secured fourth place for the Little Giants.

At the front of the Ross pack was Bentley Lopez, who delivered a tremendous race, crossing the finish line in 16:30 to finish fifth overall.

He was followed by Will Spotts, who finished 18th in 17:23; Blake Henry, 26th in 17:49; and LJ Gabel, 29th in 17:56.

That meant the top four Fremont Ross runners all broke the 18-minute mark.

Dane Denman finished 48th in 18:48, followed closely by Rich at 19:00.

"An incredible day for the Fremont Ross Boys Cross Country team, capturing a solid fourth-place finish in an exceptionally competitive field," Sheidler said. "The team packed a powerful punch with many personal records falling, highlighted by our top four runners shattering the 18-minute barrier."

Lopez's fifth-place performance was another highlight in a day filled with them.

"Leading the charge, Bentley Lopez delivered a phenomenal performance to secure an individual fifth-place finish," Sheidler added. "Outstanding effort, Little Giants—the hard work is paying off!"

From the beautiful weather to more than 400 runners competing throughout Walsh Park, it was difficult to ask for a better day for the Fremont Ross cross country program.

The boys battled their way to a top-four finish against an outstanding field. The girls stood atop the team standings for the first time in Norm Bray Invitational history. Personal records fell throughout both lineups.

And one of the oldest records in Fremont Ross history finally fell as well.

Congratulations to Coach Mark Sheidler, the Fremont Ross boys and girls cross country teams, and especially Lily Kiser on an unforgettable, record-breaking performance.

For one Saturday at Walsh Park, the work truly met the moment.
